Jon Bosak on PDF, ODF and OOXML
I have known Jon Bosak for years. For most, he needs no introduction and has been credited with many things from being a co-inventor of XML to really moving technical standards into the limelight they deserve. Most people are completely in the dark about just how much the standards game truly affects them, paying out hefty software license fees without realizing some of that goes to pay for patents and other IPR activity. John has now composed what could be his magnum opus on the topics of the recent debate over OOXML and ODF. I encourage everyone to read it. (translate)
Working on 3d text generator with papervision3d
It’s no secret I have a bit of a fetish for playing with text and making text effects in flash. Back in May I decided to create dynamic 3d TriangleMeshes from BitmapData captures of text in textfields. Like the majority of my experiments, I never finished it. I’m now posting this for three reasons: Aral Balkans [...] (translate)
360Flex wrap up
Thursday morning, just as I was about to press "publish", my swisscom *cough*RIPOFF*cough* connection CUT OFF. So, one day late, my highlights: Sunday Step off the plane, get immediately ripped off by some dodgy taxi, good start! (When I say ripped off, I mean an expensive, yet scenic drive through Milan instead of the 5 minutes [...] (translate)
Extruded text in papervision3d, with the help of some real brains…
Yesterday Den Ivanov posted a png extruder class at the papervision3d mailing list. So, within an hour or so I had an experiment with BitmapData grabbed from a textfield rotating around in extruded 3d Nope, still not even as good as the oldschool windows 3dtext screensaver (the barometer for all that is cool [...] (translate)
File attachments fixed
File attachments are fixed. I did an update to Drupal after their nag screens telling me my version was no longer secure, and there were some added or fixed permissions regarding downloading attachments that they didn't mention in their update logs. Well, the permissions are set correctly and now files should be downloadable again. Please post any other bugs with the site here. (And workaround if any) (translate)
Ask a Jedi: Advice on building a remote API?
Joshua asks: I have a hosted web app that I developed and am selling accounts to and am to the point where I would like to build an API to the data. What would be the basic structure behind an API? Would it be making a top level CFC that i... [More] (translate)

Configuring Eclipse To Use Command Line Ant
Today I finally got around to reconfiguring my local Ant install. I updated to the latest version and also configured Eclipse to use the same Ant files. I’ve known you could do this for awhile but today I was talking to Qasim in our daily scrum and finally decided to take a bit of time to [...] (translate)
Unintended Consequences of Nationalizing Banks
This is not a post for or against the actions of the Treasury. This is a quick look at what may be on the horizon--so that we can all keep our collective eyes open. I invite you to add your own observations and questions in the comments. I'd like to start you off with a couple. Now that the US... (translate)
Blu-Ray recorders coming to US soon?
We know that Blu-Ray players are the latest and greatest in the DVD playback arena, but what about Blu-ray recorders? Blu-ray recorders have been available for sale in Japan for quite awhile now, but no company has announced plans to make them available in the US. That being said, HD Guru recently blogged about an electronics show [...] (translate)
